Animal Poison Control Center (888)426-4435 While we at Diamond Labs Ranch get our puppies off to the right start with their first round of puppy vaccinations at 6 weeks of age (We use Galaxy DA2PPv+Cv) and puppies still here at 8 weeks get their second puppy shot; a good guide to follow for optimal health of your new puppy is below: Less than 10 weeks old: DHP-PARVO-CORONA: every 2 weeks until the puppy is 10 weeks old. This is called a “puppy shot” or “temporary shot” Between 10 weeks and 1 year: DHLP-PARVO-CORONA: two part series of shots given 3 weeks apart. (We use Galaxy DA2PPvL+Cv) LYME: two part series also given 3 weeks apart.(prevents Lyme disease, which is a serious disease, transmitted by ticks) Many vets no longer give the Lyme vaccine unless you request it. If you take your companion out hunting, traveling or to lakes and rivers... request it. Between 12 weeks and 1 year: RABIES 1 y One year old and beyond: a yearly booster shot of all above vaccinations (DA2PPvL+Cv, Rabies, & Lyme)
Annual
vaccinations for all of the above are necessary Heartworm: To prevent against heartworm, we recommend a preventative tablet that is given once a month at home. These tablets can be started at 8 weeks of age and should be given year round. It is best to have a yearly blood test to assure that your dog does not have heartworm in spite of being on a preventative. At Diamond Labs Ranch, we use and strongly recommend Novartis Interceptor brand. We use this brand because it not only prevents heartworm; it also prevents hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm, all in one convenient monthly dose. *Please note that additional deworming with a broad spectrum dewormer (we use Panacur C) should be done at least twice a year for optimal intestinal health of your canine companion* We use and highly recommend Frontline Plus. We personally use it year round. It is safe for puppies 8 weeks old and up. It is completely waterproof for 30 days. Frontline Plus is the #1 recommended flea & tick protection among veterinarians. Puppies can be spayed or neutered at 4 months old. There are many benefits to this procedure, including prevention of mammary gland cancer, uterine infections, unwanted pregnancies, and unwanted sexual behavior problems. It is not necessary that you allow your female to have a heat cycle or a litter of puppies unless you prefer to do so.
YOGURT-The
miracle drug for puppies. Plain yogurt can literally save your puppy’s
life. Anyone who has a new puppy at home- make sure you have a
supply of plain or vanilla flavored yogurt on hand for several days.
This should be fed to your puppy twice a day along with his/her
normal diet. Please check the label and make sure it has the acidophilus
culture and not aspartame.
Stress occurs when you take a new puppy out of the
environment he/she is accustomed to. Stress kills off the good bacteria
in the G.I. tract. This can lead to a host of potential health risks for
your puppy. Plain Yogurt culture puts the good bacteria back into their
system so you will have a happy and healthy puppy. So feed them all they
want for the first few days until they adjust to their new environment.
************************************************************************************ All DLR canine companions are fed Taste of The Wild made by Diamond Pet Foods © After some very extensive research…. we decided that our canines would nutritionally benefit from transitioning to a new, more natural diet. This change is one that we have been very excited about after all of the nutritional analysis we looked over. Their response to their diet has been outstanding! Taste of the Wild is just what the doctor ordered! Taste of the Wild also makes feeding time here at DLR much less stressful as it is suitable for all stages of life. That means no transitioning with each life stage. And with 3 flavor varieties to choose from, you can’t go wrong by your pal. (Note: during pregnancy, taste buds can be very strange for the moms to be, so we feed Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul; also made by Diamond Pet Foods.)
